Honey Festival · March 1–3, 2028 · Modesto, California
Modesto — Stanislaus County's Central Valley hub in the heart of California's San Joaquin Valley agricultural powerhouse — sits at the epicenter of the world's most important commercial bee pollination event: the annual almond bloom that transforms 1.4 million acres of California's Central Valley into a sea of white blossoms each February and March, requiring the services of more than 80 percent of all managed honeybee colonies in the United States. This late-winter festival at Graceada Park celebrates the extraordinary relationship between California's Central Valley beekeeping industry and the almond orchards of Stanislaus, Merced, and San Joaquin counties, honoring both the commercial beekeepers who truck millions of hives to California each winter for the almond bloom and the local hobby and sideliner beekeepers who maintain year-round apiaries in the Valley's diverse agricultural landscape of almonds, tomatoes, sunflowers, star thistle, and valley wildflowers. The festival features educational demonstrations on commercial almond pollination services and the economics of the migratory beekeeping industry; honey tasting showcasing the distinctive star thistle, eucalyptus, yellow starthistle, and valley wildflower honeys produced in Stanislaus County; presentations from UC Davis Bee Biology Program researchers on colony health, Varroa management, and pollination ecology; a working beeyard demonstration showing spring inspection techniques after almond bloom; artisan honey, mead, and beeswax vendors from across the San Joaquin Valley; and an agricultural heritage display connecting Modesto's century-long history as a beekeeping and almond-growing center.
