Honey Festival · May 21–23, 2027 · San Luis Obispo, California
San Luis Obispo — the Central Coast's vibrant college city at the nexus of the Edna Valley wine appellation, the Santa Lucia Highlands, and the Pacific coast — sits within one of California's most distinctive honey landscapes, where the fog-influenced climate, diverse native chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and the flowering cycles of the Central Coast's celebrated wine country vineyards create a remarkable honey flow from eucalyptus, coastal wildflower, star thistle, and the native California sage and ceanothus species that blanket the surrounding hills and canyons of San Luis Obispo County. Mission Plaza's historic downtown setting hosts this late-May festival celebrating the honey heritage of California's Central Coast, featuring beekeepers from San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Monterey counties who produce the distinctive sage, star thistle, and mixed coastal wildflower honeys unique to the Central Coast's Mediterranean climate zone. The San Luis Obispo region offers one of California's most diverse honey-producing environments: the juxtaposition of Pacific maritime influence (fog, mild temperatures, high humidity) with California's Mediterranean dry season creates a flowering calendar spanning nine months, from early-spring manzanita and ceanothus through summer star thistle to fall eucalyptus, making SLO County one of the state's most productive artisan honey areas. The festival features Central Coast varietal honey tastings comparing SLO County sage and star thistle with Santa Barbara Channel Islands and Monterey Peninsula honeys; wine-and-honey pairing experiences featuring Edna Valley Chardonnay, Paso Robles Zinfandel, and local artisan honeys; educational programs from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's Agricultural Department on Central Coast pollinator ecology; artisan vendors; and demonstrations of sustainable beekeeping practices suited to California's Mediterranean coastal climate.
