Brookings Eastern Plains Honey & Hobo Day Pioneer Heritage Festival 2033

Honey Festival · September 13–14, 2033 · Brookings, South Dakota

Brookings — home of South Dakota State University and the heart of the James River valley's agricultural wealth — anchors Brookings County's exceptional honey landscape in the transition zone between the prairie pothole country of Minnesota and the mixed-grass prairie of western South Dakota. SDSU's renowned College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences has one of the region's strongest apiculture programs, with research on Great Plains honey plants, pollinator ecology, and honey bee health. Sweet clover (Melilotus alba and M. officinalis) from the roadsides, wetland margins, and CRP lands of Brookings County provides the most productive honey flow in South Dakota's eastern counties: pale, mild, and intensely aromatic, sweet clover honey is the region's most commercially important product. Alfalfa from Brookings County's irrigated and dryland fields contributes substantially through summer. Native prairie wildflowers — prairie clover (Dalea), goldenrod, blazing star (Liatris), bergamot — from the prairie remnants along the Big Sioux River and the Oakwood Lakes area add quality and complexity to late-season harvests. Sunflowers from the James River valley's fields provide a distinctive amber late-summer honey. SDSU's Pioneer Winter Quarters Museum preserves the agricultural history of the Dakota Territory homesteading era. The festival at Pioneer Park celebrates Brookings County's role as the agricultural and educational heart of eastern South Dakota alongside its exceptional honey traditions.
