Honey Festival · September 13–14, 2033 · Hannibal, Missouri
Hannibal — boyhood home of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and cultural touchstone of the 19th-century American Midwest — anchors a honey landscape shaped by the dramatic meeting of the Mississippi River bluffs and the interior Missouri hills. Marion County's honey traditions draw on several distinct flow sources that make Hannibal-area honey remarkably varied. Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) colonizes the limestone bluffs above the Mississippi and provides the earliest major honey flow in May: light, aromatic, and highly prized by Missouri beekeepers. Basswood (Tilia americana) follows in early July from the hardwood forests of the adjacent Ozark foothills, producing a classic minty light-amber honey. White Dutch clover from the Mississippi alluvial floodplain pastures contributes through summer. Goldenrod and aster from the bluff margins and bottomland edges close the season in September. Hannibal's position on the Mississippi River — Tom Sawyer Island visible from the downtown waterfront — creates a humid micro-corridor that extends the honey season compared to more inland Missouri locations. The Mark Twain Cave complex beneath the bluffs has been a registered National Historic Landmark since 1972. The festival at Riverview Park on the high bluffs overlooking the river celebrates the agricultural and literary heritage that makes Hannibal one of America's most beloved small cities.
