Honey Festival · September 6–7, 2033 · Chillicothe, Ohio
Chillicothe — Ohio's first capital city and gateway to the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park — anchors Ross County's exceptional honey landscape where the Scioto River valley's broad alluvial floodplain meets the Appalachian foothills of the Hocking Hills region. Ross County's honey traditions reflect the extraordinary biological richness of the Scioto Valley's transition zone between Ohio's agricultural heartland and its sandstone hill country. Tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) from the mixed mesophytic forests of the Hocking Hills and the Scioto River's forested bluffs provides the region's most prized spring honey: harvested in late May, Ohio tulip poplar honey is light amber with a distinctive herbal-fruity character that Chillicothe beekeepers prize highly. Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) from the hilltop ridges and old field margins provides an earlier May flow of premium light honey. Basswood from the valley's bottomland forests follows in early July. White clover from the Scioto Valley's hayfields and pastures carries through summer. The Hopewell Earthworks — the most elaborate ceremonial earthwork complex built by any Pre-Columbian people north of Mexico, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023 — form the backdrop for this festival's setting. Ohio was one of the first states to develop commercial honey production in the 19th century. The festival at Yoctangee Park on the Scioto River celebrates Chillicothe's deep heritage as Ohio's first capital alongside the valley's exceptional honey traditions.
