Honey Festival · September 20–21, 2033 · Morganton, North Carolina
Morganton — county seat of Burke County at the foot of the Blue Ridge's eastern escarpment — occupies one of North Carolina's finest honey landscapes where the Piedmont's agricultural heritage meets the southern Appalachian forest edge. Burke County's honey traditions are anchored by sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum): the Blue Ridge foothills of western Burke County contain exceptional sourwood forest stands at elevations between 1,500-3,500 feet, producing what many honey experts consider the finest honey in North America. Sourwood honey — harvested in late July when Oxydendrum blooms prolifically in the mountain coves — is spicy-sweet, lightly caramelized, with distinctive anise notes that connoisseurs seek out specifically from the North Carolina mountains. Tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) provides the major spring flow from the mixed hardwood forests blanketing the Linville River Gorge — the deepest gorge in the eastern United States — and the surrounding Pisgah National Forest. Black locust contributes in May from the old field margins and fence rows of the Burke County farm landscape. The Waldensian community of Valdese nearby — North Carolina's Italian Waldensian colony established in 1893 — maintains traditional European beekeeping methods. The festival at Catawba Meadows Park on the Catawba River celebrates Burke County's position as a gateway to both Linville Gorge Wilderness and the Blue Ridge Parkway's extraordinary natural heritage.
