Honey Festival · September 13–14, 2033 · Dahlonega, Georgia
Dahlonega — Georgia's 'Gold Town' and the site of America's first major gold rush in 1828, now a celebrated wine and arts destination in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Lumpkin County at 1,454 feet elevation, surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest and the southern Blue Ridge's exceptional botanical diversity. Dahlonega sits at the heart of Georgia's sourwood honey country — the southern Appalachian Mountains between Georgia and North Carolina are the global epicenter of sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) honey production, and Lumpkin County's forested ridges and hollows are among the finest sourwood honey-producing landscapes in the world. Sourwood blooms in July and August, the tree's distinctive racemes of white lily-of-the-valley-like flowers cascading from every hillside in the Blue Ridge, producing a honey of incomparable character: anise-spice fragrance, creamy buttery body, light amber color, exceptional persistence, and a flavor that has earned it consistent recognition as America's finest honey. Dahlonega beekeepers also harvest tulip poplar honey from the April-May spring flow, black locust honey from the rocky ridge slopes in May, and a diverse Blue Ridge wildflower honey from the rich second-growth forest floor through the summer. The festival at Dahlonega Public Square celebrates the gold rush heritage alongside the region's sourwood honey tradition with live extraction demonstrations, artisan honey tastings paired with Dahlonega wineries, competitive honey shows, and Blue Ridge wildflower botanical walks.
