Honey Festival · July 6–7, 2028 · Kula, Hawaii
Kula — Maui's storied Upcountry farming district perched at 2,800–3,200 feet on the southern slopes of Haleakala — is Hawaii's most surprising honey country, where the island's volcanic upland climate supports a botanical diversity utterly unlike the lowland tropics below. The Kula lavender fields, silversword-adjacent native shrublands, macadamia orchards, eucalyptus groves, protea farms, and the unique fusion of introduced and native Hawaiian flora create honey profiles found nowhere else in the state — floral, complex, and deeply influenced by the misty, cool microclimates that distinguish Upcountry Maui from the sun-drenched coast. The Kula Community Association fairgrounds host this midsummer festival celebrating Upcountry Maui honey culture, bringing together beekeepers from Kula, Makawao, Pukalani, and the Haleakala slopes who manage colonies in some of Hawaii's most botanically diverse habitats. Festival highlights include a Kula honey varietal competition with judging categories for macadamia blossom, eucalyptus, lavender blend, and Upcountry wildflower; farm tours to Kula's working lavender, protea, and organic vegetable farms where honey production is integral to the agricultural ecosystem; mead and honey-food pairings featuring Upcountry-grown produce; educational sessions from University of Hawaii extension on tropical and subtropical bee health; and cultural programs connecting Hawaiian honey traditions to the multiethnic Upcountry farming community.
