Honey Festival · May 24–25, 2033 · Moab, Utah
Moab — gateway to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, world mountain biking capital, and the Colorado Plateau's iconic tourism hub — anchors Grand County's extraordinary high-desert honey landscape at 4,000 feet elevation along the Colorado River. Grand County's honey traditions draw on the arid canyon country's remarkable array of drought-adapted flowering plants. Desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) from the arroyos and wash bottoms of the Colorado River's canyon system produces a highly aromatic summer honey with orchid-like floral notes that Moab beekeepers prize as one of Utah's most distinctive products. Rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa) from the canyon benches and slickrock flats provides the most prolific late-summer fall flow: golden yellow, mildly sweet, with a distinctive herbal quality from the rubber rabbitbrush. Tamarisk (Tamarix ramosissima) — introduced but now pervasive in canyon riparian zones — flowers profusely in June and July producing a mild medium honey used extensively by Moab beekeepers to fill summer harvest gaps. Cliffrose (Purshia mexicana) from the canyon rim pinon-juniper zone adds a uniquely aromatic spring honey. The Colorado River's canyon landscape, formed over 6 million years of Plateau uplift, provides the backdrop for Moab's extraordinary natural heritage. Grand County Beekeepers Association works one of Utah's most extreme honey landscapes. The festival at Swanny City Park on the Colorado River celebrates Moab's canyon country heritage and its role as gateway to two of America's greatest national parks.
