Salida — the Chaffee County city in the Arkansas River valley surrounded by Colorado's highest mountain peaks — occupies a dramatic high-country setting at 7,083 feet where beekeepers work apiaries in the headwaters country of one of America's most storied rivers, harvesting exceptional alpine wildflower, sweet clover, alfalfa, rabbitbrush, and mountain meadow honey from forage communities that extend from the fertile valley floor irrigated pastures up to the wildflower meadows of the Sawatch Range and San Isabel National Forest. This August festival in Riverside Park celebrates Chaffee County's beekeeping heritage alongside the city's renowned arts community and extraordinary outdoor recreation, featuring honey from producers working the Upper Arkansas River valley from Leadville to Cañon City, guided nature walks through native pollinator waystation corridors along the Arkansas River, presentations on high-altitude beekeeping adaptations, and pairings of local honey varieties with Salida's growing craft beverage scene.
