Honey Festival · August 5–6, 2033 · Brainerd, Minnesota
Brainerd — gateway to Minnesota's famous 'Land of 10,000 Lakes' at the southern edge of the Northwoods transition zone — anchors a honey landscape defined by the intersection of northern forest, agricultural margin, and the extraordinary wetland and lake ecosystems of Crow Wing County. Basswood (Tilia americana) provides Minnesota's premier honey flow: in mid-July, when the linden forests of the Northwoods transition zone burst into bloom, Brainerd-area beekeepers can harvest exceptional pale gold basswood honey with its characteristic minty-lime overtones. Sweet clover (Melilotus alba) on the roadsides and agricultural margins provides a reliable summer baseline. Alsike clover from dairy pastures throughout the region contributes. Native prairie wildflowers — goldenrod, wild bergamot, purple coneflower — from the Oak Savanna remnants south of Brainerd round out the late-season flow. The Crow Wing River, immortalized in the Little House on the Prairie stories of Paul Bunyan country, flows through this festival's heartland. Crow Wing County beekeepers have managed hives in this Northwoods-agricultural transition zone for over 150 years. The festival at Kiwanis Park on the Mississippi River celebrates the meeting of Northwoods wilderness and agricultural heartland that makes Brainerd-area honey uniquely complex.
