Port Townsend — the Victorian seaport city in Jefferson County on the Olympic Peninsula at the entrance to Puget Sound — occupies a landscape of Pacific temperate rainforest, meadows, coastal bluffs, and maritime gardens where beekeepers harvest distinctive bigleaf maple, red alder, fireweed, salal, and Olympic wildflower honey from apiaries nestled against the Olympic National Park boundary. This August festival in Uptown Port Townsend celebrates the Olympic Peninsula beekeeping tradition amid the town's remarkable concentration of National Historic Landmark Victorian architecture, featuring honey from Jefferson and Clallam County producers, guided tours of Heritage Gardens at Fort Worden State Park and their restoration of native Puget Sound meadow pollinators, presentations by Olympic National Park naturalists on forest edge wildflower ecology in the rain shadow zone, and honey pairings with locally harvested Dungeness crab, oysters, and Pacific Northwest artisan foods. The festival celebrates the ecological and cultural distinction of the Olympic Peninsula, where the rain shadow creates conditions for honey varietals found nowhere else in Washington State.
