Sitka Southeast Alaska Honey & Wild Garden Heritage Festival 2032

Honey Festival · July 11–12, 2032 · Sitka, Alaska

Sitka — the former Russian capital of Alaska on Baranof Island in the Alexander Archipelago, where the temperate rainforest of the Tongass National Forest — North America's largest national forest — produces an extraordinary mosaic of fireweed, Sitka rose, salmonberry blossom, red clover, cottonwood, and coastal meadow wildflower that sustains one of Alaska's most distinctive beekeeping traditions in a landscape shaped by Southeast Alaska's maritime climate, Native Tlingit cultural heritage, and the dramatic fjord and island geography of the Inside Passage — is home to a small but passionate community of beekeepers who have adapted their practice to the unique challenges and rewards of island beekeeping in the rain-forest environment. This July festival at Crescent Harbor celebrates Sitka's remarkable honey heritage through producers from across Baranof and surrounding Southeast Alaska communities, educational programs on the unique challenges of beekeeping in temperate rainforest environments, guided tastings featuring fireweed, Sitka rose, and coastal wildflower honey varietals rarely available outside the region, cultural connections between traditional Tlingit ethnobotany and the wildflower sources that sustain Sitka's bees, and demonstrations of sustainable small-scale beekeeping practices adapted to Alaska's island communities.
