Hungarian Sunflower Honey (Napraforgóméz)

Sunflower honey from Mézes Gergő Méhészete, a family apiary in Vizsoly, in the Hernád valley of north-east Hungary. Hungary is one of Europe's largest sunflower growers, and this is the honey bees make from those fields in July and August. It is bright golden-yellow and crystallises fast, usually within one to two weeks, into a firm, fine-grained set. The aroma is distinctive and slightly herbal, the taste soft and sweet with a mild tang. The producer recommends it for gingerbread (mézeskalács); it also works for spreading on toast, sweetening tea, glazes and homemade ice cream. Sold in 45 g to 950 g jars.
